independent distribution

Distributing movies has changed a great deal in the last couple of decades. Gone are the days when one needed an experienced distributor to get their work to the masses.
Sure a distributor has connections with theaters and manufacturing companies to make the hard copy DVDs. However, now a lot of this can be done on your own. Now we have the ability to easily self distribute our films. And you can still get them into theaters in a manner of speaking. Through independent distribution we are changing the way movies are watched and sold to the public.

Sites like Createspace provide phenomenal opportunities for independent films to be distributed. Allowing the independent producer to upload their project via their site and distribute on Amazon, allows for a more streamlined on demand nature of distribution. With digital downloads being a more popular means of watching films its even cheaper to distribute since you don’t have to buy large scale orders of DVDs. Now you can offer the film to be downloaded as a digital file. DVDs can still be made but now we can make them as needed instead of batch manufacturing. This saves money on distribution and allows independent distribution to be more viable than it previously was.

As far as getting films into theaters it can be done through film festivals. Film festivals like Sundance and Toronto allow indie filmmakers an opportunity to show their projects on the big screen without the hassle of dealing with a major distributor. While these festivals have always been around, it’s even easier these days with the advent of modern digital camera technology to shoot these films. This allows more indie films to make it to the big screens of the festivals where distributor will often be watching to buy new content to add to their already massive catalogues.
