Budgeting: things to keep in mind

A big part of being a movie producer is understanding numbers. More specifically its understanding financial numbers. The producer of any film is directly responsible for finding funding for the project. In order to accomplish what seems like an impossible task there are a few things to keep in mind.

Lets start with equipment. Ever production requires equipment. things like lights, cameras, and sound equipment. These things cost money. A lot of money. Lighting equipment alone can run several thousands of dollars if your not careful. Camera equipment is another major expense. Keep in mind you have to rent the camera and the lenses plus all the mounts and accessories.

The next big expense is you art direction and production design.building sets and wardrobes and props is an expensive proposition. In order to build a proper set you need large quantities of lumber, power tools, hand tools, and paint. Not to mention all the props necessary to dress the set appropriately. If props need to be made by hand they can be even more expensive. And don’t forget about wardrobe. Without a wardrobe to match the set design what good is any of it? Remember your wardrobe is just as important as how the set itself looks.

Last but not least you have your cast and crew. When budgeting for a film your cast and crew are vital. Not only do they need to be paid but they come with various other expenses like food gas or even lodging if required. If any one of these areas is forgotten you can bet you will have an unhappy crew and an unhappy crew is never good. Make sure your crew is taken care of and they will do what ever they can to take care of you.
