J.J. Abrams - Master of Mystery

J.J. Abrams is arguably one of the most influential and successful producers in Hollywood today. From Cloverfield to Lost to his most recent endeavor Revolution, he has proven a mastery of the mystery drama.

In his TED talk he discusses how a mystery box he had bought decades earlier was the basis of everything he creates. He talks about how mystery is the catalyst for imagination.  Its all about the possibilities, what can this be? In every tv show, every movie he shoots mystery is everywhere and its what draws audiences in.

A good producer is one who recognizes the advantage of mystery. Some of the greatest films of all time are just a series of mysteries that follow one another. Abrams mentions how Star Wars is one mystery followed by another mystery whose solution brings about even more mysteries.

He goes on to discuss the possibilities that technology has brought to the filmmaking process. Modern filmmaking technology allows filmmakers the ability to do just about anything.  In Lost many of the scenes they have would have been impossible without modern visual effects.

He also mentioned how anyone has the ability to become a filmmaker. With new digital cameras and modern computers it is easy to shoot a movie, cut the film, and add digital effect, right from your personal laptop. The possibilities are endless.

I think that Abrams ability to take mystery and turn it into possibility is what makes him such a successful producer. He doesn’t get held back by conventional thinking or limited perspective. He sees all possibilities and gives that same point of view to his audiences who beg for more. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I for one cant wait to see what he can think up next. I guess its just going to remain a mystery.
